"You are missing the point" - why Rothko's paintings can't and shouldn't be analysed...

I saw the Seagram Murals by Mark Rothko for the first time in the summer of the year 2000 when I was 17 (Don’t try to do the maths!) I could recognise a Rothko but that was all I knew of his work- what it looked like. As I entered the Rothko room with my classmates, we did the usual slow gallery walk around the room. I sat down on the bench and my classmates plodded out, leaving me on my own. I stared at one of the dark red paintings until I’d lost track of all time. And then completely unexpectedly I burst into tears. Full on ugly crying ...
